Updated July 15, 2020
Health and Safety
If a student I am in contact with has been around someone who tests positive for COVID-19, will I need to quarantine? If so, will I have to use 14 sick days?
Legacy administration will follow and instruct employees to follow guidance based on the Department of Health recommendations. If an employee comes into close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID they will receive a timely notification and should consult with their medical provider for further guidance. If employees are directed to quarantine by their medical provider, they may be eligible for emergency paid sick leave or other types of medical leave. Emergency paid sick leave does not impact an employee’s paid time off balance.
How will immune-compromised teachers or students be affected during the 2020-21 school year?
Immune-compromised students will be able to select online learning for the 2020-21 school year. If they select in-person learning but need to miss school for an extended period of time, they will be able to login to Schoology and complete coursework online.
How will social distancing work in classrooms with more than 10-15 students?
Students will be required to wear face coverings since physical distancing is not always possible.
If a teacher's child needs to quarantine will the educator parent be required to use their sick days?
If a teacher is not showing any symptoms of COVID and resides with someone who has tested positive for COVID, they should consult with their medical provider to determine if quarantine is necessary. HR/Benefits will work with the employee and their medical provider to determine what leave of absence options are available if needed. If an employee chooses to self-quarantine without showing any symptoms and without medical guidance to do so, the employee would need to submit paid or unpaid time off from work.
Will state attendance laws be changed so students and families aren't compelled to come to school sick?
At this time, the state has made no changes. However, if students need to stay home because they are sick, they can login to Schoology and complete schoolwork. If they login to Schoology and complete work each day that they are home, they will not be marked absent on those days.
Will teachers need to sign a waiver to work?
No.
Will students sign a waiver protecting teachers in the event that a student gets sick while in their class?
No.
Will campuses continue to hold drills, such as fire, active shooter and evacuation drills? If so, how often? How will we social distance in the event of a drill?
Emergency evacuation drills will be practiced in small groups so that students are prepared in the event that there is a need to engage in an actual procedure. Drills will not be held on a campus-wide scale to avoid unnecessary large group gatherings. Fire Drills will be scheduled by grade level to avoid a large group gathering. Campus administration will create a monthly schedule to ensure all classes practice evacuation via exit routes once monthly. The audible alarm will not be used due to the frequency of drills. Campus Alert Drills and Lockdown Drills will also be scheduled by grade level to practice procedures.
Who will clean shared materials like computers?
The campus facilities team will oversee cleaning and sanitizing efforts throughout the campus for daily routine cleaning, sanitizing of high touch surfaces, and deep cleaning after large group gatherings. In addition to this, staff members will have the following sanitizing repsonsibilities:

What are teacher expectations for the use of Schoology, if a teacher is only teaching in-person?
Teachers who are teaching in-person will need to send their weekly communication/newsletter via Schoology. Teachers will also be expected to use Schoology as a supplement to their classroom, and if a child is out for an extended absence will need to monitor Schoology for that student during that time.
Since Schoology is compatible with PowerSchool/Infinite Campus, can teachers grade using this platform? Or will teachers have to input grades in both Schoology and PowerSchool/Infinite Campus?
Yes. Instructors may use Schoology to grade. They will not need to input grades in both Schoology and PowerSchool/Infinite Campus, as grades will pass from Schoology to PowerSchool/Infinite Campus.
If a teacher creates a quiz in Schoology to assess student understanding but they don't want the grade to pass back to PowerSchool/Infinite Campus, is there a way to not have it populate?
Yes. Instructors will have an option to un-check the “Sync to SIS” box to exclude any assignments or quiz grades that they don’t want to pass back to PowerSchool/Infinite Campus.
WIll all assessments be given in Schoology?
For remote learners, yes, all assessments will be taken within the Schoology platform. For our students choosing to attend school in person, assessments may be taken in Schoology, however they are not required to be taken in Schoology.
Are teachers going to create courses for online students or is Vertex creating them for teachers?
Vertex will create master courses for all core content areas (math, reading, science, and social studies) for grades K-8. However, teachers will have the ability to add approved resources to meet the unique needs of their students.
Can teachers preview a course as it appears for a student in Schoology?
Yes, you will be able to preview a course as it appears for a student with the “View Course As” function. “View Course As” is a function that enables a course administrator to view courses as a specific member or student would.
For teachers who have multiple sections of the same course, is there a way to post materials across multiple sections?
Yes, you will be able to use the “linked section” feature. The linked section feature was designed to improve the instructor’s experience. Your students will continue to see and experience Schoology in the same way they always have. When sections are linked, they all share the same set of materials and grade setup. This means you only need to create materials and set up your gradebook once, even when you teach multiple sections of the same course. When adding new material, you will have the option to add it to all sections or specific sections. Linked sections also have toggles you can use to switch between each section instantly, so you can keep the sections separate while enjoying a more streamlined workflow.
Is there a feature similar to Google Hangouts where we can meet live with our students if needed?
Yes. Teachers will be able to meet live with their students using Google Meets if needed. Teachers will also use Google Meets to interact with students when conducting their live tutoring sessions twice a week.
When will new teachers receive their Legacy Schoology account?
New teachers will receive their Legacy Schoology accounts in mid-July.
Will parents have a Schoology account?
Parents will have the ability to create a Schoology account that links to their child’s account. Having a parent account in Schoology is like having two accounts:
1. The parent’s personal account with their own name and information
2. The Child Activity view. From here, the parent can view Schoology from their child’s perspective. They will be able to see what their child sees and receive updates about their child’s activity.
Will a "how-to" guide for creating Schoology accounts be made available to parents, so that they know how to create a Schoology account and link it to their child's account?
In order for parents to be linked to their child in Schoology, they will need to receive a parent access code from their child’s instructor. Parents will then be able to sign up for Schoology and use this code to link to their child. The instructors will be responsible for distributing parent access codes to the parents.
Does Schoology provide video and audio features? For example, can a teacher post a video of themselves playing an instrument or a piece of music that students are learning and will the students be able to post recordings of themselves playing?
Yes. Schoology does provide video and audio features for both instructors and students.
Can we link accounts between teachers, so that if we assign or add material to one teacher's courses, it would populate in other teachers' courses?
Separate instructor accounts do not have the ability to be linked. Therefore, one instructor would not be able to add material to another instructor’s courses. However, instructors can share resources by using group resources. Anyone who is a member of that group will be able to access the resources and copy them to any courses added to the resources group.
Is Schoology compatible with Google? Can students submit assignments in Schoology which they create in Google Docs, Slides, etc?
Yes, Schoology is compatible with Google. The Google Drive Assignments App will be installed for each instructor and will enable them to assign Google Docs, Spreadsheets, Slideshows and Drawings from directly within the Schoology platform. When a student opens the assigned file, an individual student copy is automatically generated. This will allow the student to work on the assignment and submit it within Schoology. The instructor can also provide feedback and grade the assignment without leaving Schoology.
Will we be using Schoology regardless of whether we are teaching in the classroom or teaching virtually?
Schoology will be used regardless of whether you are teaching in the classroom or teaching our remote students. If you are teaching in the classroom, you will use Schoology as a resource and will follow the expectations established by your campus administration. However, if you are teaching our remote students, Schoology will be used as the primary mode for learning and instruction.
Can teachers assign material from HMH for Science and Social Studies or from PearsonRealize?
You will not be able to assign material from the student’s HMH ED/PearsonRealize accounts directly. Schoology does not link to the student’s ED/PearsonRealize accounts.
Will teachers still use Clever as a single-sign on to access the curriculum? If so, will Clever and Schoology talk to each other?
Teachers will still be able to access Clever during the 2020-21 school year. There will be a button in Schoology which will take teachers to Clever. However, the Clever and Schoology platforms do not “talk” to each other.
Training
Will there be specialized, paid training for staff to prepare before the first day of school for all these changes?
Yes. All teachers go through pre-service training prior to the start of school every year. The re-opening guidelines for Legacy campuses will be part of the training this year.
Special Classes
How will physical education classes look this year?
Physical Education classes will be held outdoors to the greatest extent possible. Staff members and students may remove face coverings when outdoors and when observing physical distancing of 6 feet.
How will special classes such as band, music and art be handled?
Students will not be able to play instruments during band class and must wear face coverings. The class will consist of more general music instruction until further notice. When face coverings are no longer required by state and local authorities, band class may resume as normal.
Student Placement
If a student who was initially assigned to my classroom decides to do online learning for the first quarter, are they still going to be my student?
No. The student will be assigned an online teacher. The online teacher will remain that child’s teacher while schools are closed and for the entire first quarter or however long the student continues with online learning.
If a student who was initially assigned to my classroom does online learning for the first quarter but returns to in-person learning during the second quarter, will they be my student?
If students return to campus at the end of any quarter, they will be assigned to the class with the lowest number of students, so there is no guarantee that you will have that student.
If a student chooses online learning and are assigned an online teacher but schools do NOT open on Aug.17, will the student then be assigned back to their original classroom teacher, since all students will be learning online?
No. If schools do not open on Aug.17, this does not mean students will return to their originally assigned teacher. They will remain with their online teacher while the students who chose in-person learning will remain with their in-person teacher. At that point, we will have to be prepared to transition the in-person student groups back into school as soon as we are able (which could be before the end of the first quarter).
